Make Travel Matter – A Red Carnation Exclusive Experience (Included): The Anatolian Sheep Dogs – Enjoy during one of the days of your stay, a very special encounter with the cherished Anatolian Sheep Dogs. The dogs serve as livestock guardians and have been chosen thanks to the breed’s longstanding reputation for protective instincts. Originally from central Turkey, Anatolian Sheep Dogs can be relied upon for their keen eyesight as well as their impressive speed and agility and have long been used to fend off local predators. A working breed with an impressive size, they are known for their loyal instincts as well as their sandy-colored coat, which cleverly blends in seamlessly with the local environment, that help the herds that the dogs protect. Notoriously elusive and rare, the Cape Leopard lives in the Cederberg Mountains that surround Bushmans Kloof, and the Cape Leopard Trust works tirelessly to protect this precious breed. Unfortunately, as the human population in the local area has increased, so too has the number of attacks by the leopards on livestock. Fully committed to protecting its environment, as well as the local communities and wildlife, Bushmans Kloof is delighted with this natural and responsible solution to the issue of protecting one rare species while encouraging another to help protect it, which allows both the Cederberg’s farming communities and the Cape Leopard population to flourish.

A Red Carnation Exclusive Experience (Included): Ancient Rock Art & Cultural Heritage – Bushmans Kloof is the custodian of some of South Africa’s most important rock art. Across the 7500-hectare reserve more than 130 rock art sites, painted by the indigenous San people, regarded as one of the oldest indigenous tribes in Africa. The San people have developed a rich, diverse and fascinating culture, and this region’s rock art has been dated as far back as 10,000 years ago. The San peoples, or Bushmen, are the members of the indigenous hunter-gatherer cultures of southern Africa, and the oldest surviving cultures of the region. In recognition of the cultural value of these artworks and our ongoing preservation efforts, the rock art of Bushmans Kloof has been declared a South African National Heritage Site. Alongside the captivating rock art sites on the reserve, our Heritage Centre offers guests a deeper insight into the history, culture and society of the San through a comprehensive reference library, artefacts, photographic record and specialist talks by our in-house curator.

Makana Dinner – A Red Carnation Culinary Experience (Included): Bushmans Kloof is in many ways a celebration of San culture and heritage. Embracing their traditions, we have prepared for our guests to experience a Makana Dinner – the ancient San language Makana means ‘to feast’. It’s an apt description of what awaits guests at our dining venue, where you’ll enjoy a bountiful cultural harvest. Clad in local sandstone and roofed with traditional thatch, our Makana dining experience echos the natural caves and simple dwellings used by the earliest inhabitants of this ancient landscape. Tables look out over the Boontjies River and wide grassy lawns, where often antelope graze in the evenings. Relax in the cozy lounges near a wide hearth where a roaring fire keep the evening cooler breezes at bay, and where stories begin to unfold.

Enjoy two overnights at Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve in air-conditioned Luxury Room accommodations. (All Meals are included each day of your stay – Breakfast, Lunch, an extensive High Tea and a la carte Dinner; one evening during your stay the Makana Cultural Dinner experience is also included). Please review the “Not Included” section of pricing for services that are paid directly and/or that are optional.

Conservation and Co-Existence Cultural Experience
This experience is the perfect compliment for any visitors to Botswana interested in conservation and culture. The experience combines a visit to two community coexistence projects located in one of the most remote parts of the Okavango Delta. The first stop will showcase the work of CLAWS (Communities Living Among Wildlife Sustainably). Human & Wildlife conflict is a daily concern for many people living in the remote villages of the Okavango Delta. Farmers often lose livestock to predators such as lions. A herding program was established by CLAWS and is run by the community to reduce carnivore conflict and benefit livestock owners with veterinary assistance and improved rangelands. The experience includes a talk with the head herdsman of the project and a guided tour of the bomas used for confining and protecting cattle. On arrival at our second project, guests will be taken on a two-and-a-half-hour tour with the ‘Life With Elephants’ tour group in the traditional Hambukushu village of Eretsha. The tour group was set up by the conservation NGO, Ecoexist in an effort to increase benefits coming back to communities that coexist with Elephants. Guests are guided on a tour of the village to experience all aspects of village life, including visiting the local school and a typical farmer household. After the tour, the day to day challenges of living amongst elephants are explained by village elders, followed by  traditional song and dance. This unique experience offers a rare insight into remote village life in this part of Botswana, whilst showcasing how people strive to share space and resources with elephants. Ecoexist is facilitating and supporting new elephant- themed enterprises like this one as part of its strategy to promote coexistence between people and elephants. These remote projects are accessible by helicopter whilst showcasing some of the most picturesque scenes of the panhandle enroute. Together we pride ourselves in offering an integrated, sustainable and people driven approach to empowering communities in Northern Botswana. By booking this experience both projects are able to carry on supporting such an important issue for both villagers & wildlife in Botswana.

Enjoy three overnights are at Xigera Lodge in air-conditioned Luxury Suite accommodations. (All Meals are included each day of your stay – Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner; all non-alcoholic and select alcoholic beverages are also included with the exception of beverages and liquors on the Premium List Menu; activities included or optional choice add-ons are as noted above). ADVENTURE TERMS & CONDITIONS

Adventure is non-refundable (this applies to all deposits and final payments).

This Adventure requires 10-16 people to operate at the price quoted; even if less participants join, the Adventure can still operate however an increase in cost would occur, which Thirdhome will advise all participants.

Thirdhome strongly recommends that all participants purchase travel insurance in order to participate in an Adventure. The unexpected can (and frequently does) happen, and especially after the final payment is made the cancellation penalties can be costly. A travel protection plan can cover you for many unexpected disruptions you may encounter as specified in the plan, including trip cancellation, trip interruption, travel delays, baggage loss or delay, emergency medical expense, emergency medical evacuation, and more.

THIRDHOME has partnered with USI Affinity Travel Insurance Click here to obtain a quote.

Important Note: Cancel for Any Reason travel insurance is required to be purchased within 14-days of confirming your Adventure participation (once you have paid an Adventure deposit and/or Final Payment); otherwise Standard Insurance can be purchased at any time prior to your departure.

Per the policy, the optional CFAR coverage “must be purchased within 14 days of the date the initial Payment or Deposit is paid and insure the cost of any subsequent arrangement(s) added to the same Covered Trip within 14 days of the date of Payment or Deposit for any such subsequent Covered Trip arrangement(s); and this insurance coverage is purchased for the full cost of all non-refundable prepaid Covered Trip arrangements.” If you do not meet these requirements, you may be ineligible for reimbursement of a CFAR claim. What this means is, you must insure 100% of your trip costs on the same plan, including components of your trip you have booked separately from ThirdHome, such as airline tickets, excursions, rental car, etc. In simplified terms, you must insure each component of your trip within 14 days of making the travel arrangement, and in order to quality for the benefits under Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance, all travel components you have paid for require being insured under one travel insurance umbrella.

Any traveler that elects not to purchase travel insurance, agrees to release Thirdhome and its tour operation partners from liability for any loss of funds incurred due to the cancellation of a specific Thirdhome Adventure as a result of, but not limited to, an act of God, a failure to purchase travel insurance, the cessation of business with respect to a tour operator/ground operator partnered services, and/or the failure of a tour operator/ground operator to refund consumer deposits or payments following the cancellation of a Thirdhome Adventure or a material failure to complete the operation of any Thirdhome Adventure.

Thirdhome Adventures reserves the right to modify, change or cancel itinerary accommodations and/or alter tour routing and operations, if conditions beyond our control and that of our travel partners who operate our journeys, require such alterations thereof due to any unforeseen circumstances.
