ABOUT THIS ADVENTURE
This culturally immersive Cape to Wilderness safari experience will provide guests a memorable and insightful journey of what “Makes Travel Matter” with unique Red Carnation properties and experiences. This extraordinary Adventure showcases the genuine spirit of South Africa and Botswana, masterfully woven into the tapestry of our curated itinerary.
We begin our extraordinary trifecta South African journey at the award-winning Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa, part of the family-run Red Carnation Hotel Collection, is situated on Cape Town’s most scenic route. Poised above the Atlantic Ocean, this five-star boutique hotel is flanked by the majestic Table Mountain National Park, a World Heritage Site, offering up magnificent views of the Twelve Apostles mountain range. The hotel offers luxurious accommodations along with a holistic spa, private cinema and breathtaking views from the legendary Azure Restaurant and The Leopard Bar. While in Cape Town, we will explore each day three unique regions – the Cape Peninsula with a visit to Boulder Beach, encounter the Penguin Colony, False Bay and the charming fishing village of Simon’s Town; Table Mountain, Lion’s Head and the bustling Downtown region and Wharf; along with a Winelands escape to taste the famous wines produced in the Franschhoek and Stellenbosch region.
Our second marvelous stop on this Adventure will entail a journey (just three hours’ drive from Cape Town), into the Cederberg Mountains on South Africa’s dramatic off-the-beaten-path west coast. Nestled in the foothills of this ecological oasis, is the magical wilderness reserve and wellness retreat of Bushman’s Kloof, which sits among open plains, sandstone formations and ancient bush art sites. Bushmans Kloof is a proclaimed South African Natural Heritage Site, and the custodian of more than 130 San rock art sites, dating back as far as 10,000 years. Led by our expert guides, you will explore the landscape on foot and in 4×4 vehicles to discover the remarkable rock art of the reserve. While at the Homestead, be immersed within one of Africa’s multi-award-winning havens, to enjoy awe-inspiring activities, unique dining, ancient African culture, dramatic views and outstanding nature experiences. Discover the ancient rituals of the San people with a visit to our fascinating Heritage Centre, or settle in at the library to delve into the many reference works on offer. The walls of the lodge are filled with artworks from the Tollman family’s private collection, including a remarkable suite of bespoke creations from the acclaimed Ardmore Ceramic Gallery. Come evening, delve into the world of South African wine, or let one of our nature guides take you on a stargazing journey through the southern skies. A stay at Bushmans Kloof is the perfect moment to enrich your mind and feed your soul through art, literature, nature and cultural history.
We will continue onward to our third location of the main Adventure, on a dual-flight journey into Maun, Botswana, to the stunning nature-masterpiece of Xigera Safari Lodge. A love letter to the magic of the African bush, Xigera Lodge is the culmination of a lifelong dream of the Tollman family, drawing on six decades of devotion to unparalleled luxury in service which oozes from every aspect of this exquisite lodge. From its handcrafted exterior architecture to its posh evocative interior spaces, and its one-of-a-kind nature encounters surrounded by the protected water-wonderland, it will completely beguile one’s senses and stir their souls. Xigera is a living gallery of African art and design, an entirely unique celebration of the continent’s creativity, honoring indigenous traditions while seeking out bold new interpretations. Transformed by Africa’s life-enhancing beauty and the geological phenomenon of the Okavango Delta (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), it is a story of remarkable renewal, and a rebirth of the family legacy’s pioneering spirit that inspired this property into creation. Xigera (pronounced ‘kee-jera’), is named for the Pied Kingfisher bird that makes its home amid the serene watery channels of the Botswana’s Moremi Game Reserve. Enjoy a variety of game drives, canoeing explorations and fishing on the water canals, along with an optional Habu Village by helicopter excursion to experience this ecological sustainable community. A myriad of species can be encountered within the Moremi Game Reserve, including the African bush elephant, African buffalo, hippopotamus, wildebeest, giraffe, Nile crocodile, lion, cheetah, leopard, brown hyena, spotted hyena, greater kudu, sable antelope, black rhinoceros, white rhinoceros, plains zebra, warthog and chacma baboon.

SIPPING THE CAPE WINELANDS
After breakfast this morning, we will depart the hotel for a lovely 1-1/2-hour journey into the spectacular Cape Winelands region of South Africa – focusing on the areas of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch.
Franschhoek – Founded by French Huguenots over 350 years ago, Franschhoek village is regarded as the culinary capital of South Africa. Here, fine dining establishments and an artisanal route feature the finest chocolate, olives, cheeses, charcuterie and baked goods. It lies at the foot of the magnificent Franschhoek and Drakenstein
mountains and guesthouses, café lined streets, antique stores, art galleries, bakeries and the chocolaterie evoke a fantastically French flair.
Stellenbosch – With records dating back to 1679, Stellenbosch is steeped in history and charm. Mighty oak trees line the streets and frame surviving examples of Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture that are famous in the Cape. The Stellenbosch wine route is the oldest in South Africa, established in 1971 and constantly evolving to spotlight the spectacular varietals of the region.
Today enjoy two fabulous wine tastings of local varietals and take the opportunity to meet the wine maker as you enjoy an intimate wine tour. Within these experiences, local nibbles will be paired by the wine houses, whether it be a locally produced cheese or an artisan chocolate with wine pairing.
A Regional Gourmet Lunch: In addition to award-winning wines, this region is world-renowned for its spectacular restaurants. Let yourself be tempted by the serene surroundings and culinary delights with a lovely group lunch. Lunch will be served at The Wherf Restaurant at Boschendal Vineyards – ideally located alongside the original cellar of the Manor House and featuring picturesque views of the valley, the Werf Restaurant offers contemporary soil-to-fork table dining using the best available local, seasonal and ethically sourced ingredients.
Hot Air Ballooning Excursion (Optional): Marvel at unforgettable views with a hot-air balloon fly-over experience as your soar above the scenic Cape winelands. With the balloons fired up before dawn, you’ll watch the first rays of light wash across the vineyards, with vistas stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Drakenstein Mountains outside the historic town of Stellenbosch.
After lunch, return to the hotel in the early afternoon, with free time on your own to relax at the hotel or enjoy a swim, or an optional spa treatment. Dinner on your own this evening. Overnight at the Twelve Apostles Hotel. (Breakfast and Lunch included; including the two group wine tastings – one each in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek)
MONDAY, APRIL 15 (2024)
JOURNEY TO BUSHMANS KLOOF
After breakfast this morning, depart the hotel by private group vehicle for the scenic 3-hour journey to the Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Preserve cradled by the Cederberg Mountains. Upon arrival, enjoy a welcome drink, refreshments and snacks, and begin to unwind and settle into this extraordinary Homestead. Enjoy a group gathering traditional Kadoro open-air dinner experience this evening. Overnight at Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat in air-conditioned Luxury Room accommodations. (Breakfast, refreshments with snacks and Dinner included)
TUESDAY – WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16 & APRIL 17 (2024)
WILDERNESS & WELLNESS EXPERIENCE DAYS
Enjoy two additional extraordinary days in this 7500-hectare Wilderness reserve, with a variety of enriching and exhilarating lodge activities including: nature drives, guided rock art excursions, botanical walks, canoeing, archery, fly fishing, hiking, mountain biking, swimming, special interest presentations (birding, entomology and eco-nature guided talks). Of course merely relaxing is welcomed and encouraged, as are optional heavenly Spa experiences. Treatments are inspired by ancient African traditions alongside signature B|Africa and Tata Harper products, drawing on native African plant extracts, such as baobab tree oil, mafura butter, cape aloe and rooibos. Or perhaps escape into the secluded Riverside Gazebo, ideal for couples seeking an al fresco, side-by-side treatment, while taking in panoramic views from the outdoor spa gazebo, alongside the tranquil waters of the Boontjies River. The Lodge provides guests a calming oasis with access to the crystal steam room, heated outdoor pool, health bar, fitness center and tranquility lounge at no additional cost. Each day unwind with High Tea as you take in the changing colors of the sky and the mountain range.
The Homestead is very much the heart of Bushmans Kloof. During the day it is the perfect gathering place for guests to trade travel tales at the bar, or to seek quiet moments of learning in the Heritage Centre. Admire the diverse collection of South African artworks that grace the walls, and the striking Ardmore Ceramics on display in the main lounge; each of the five urns is a bespoke creation celebrating the wildlife of the reserve. Alongside, a well-stocked library offers a fascinating collection of reference works, Africana and a comprehensive collection of wildlife films. In the evenings, enjoy fine dining in the Cederberg for a culinary discovery of South African fare. In addition, there is WiFi throughout the Lodge should you need to connect with the outside world.
Make Travel Matter – A Red Carnation Exclusive Experience (Included): The Anatolian Sheep Dogs – Enjoy during one of the days of your stay, a very special encounter with the cherished Anatolian Sheep Dogs. The dogs serve as livestock guardians and have been chosen thanks to the breed’s longstanding reputation for protective instincts. Originally from central Turkey, Anatolian Sheep Dogs can be relied upon for their keen eyesight as well as their impressive speed and agility and have long been used to fend off local predators. A working breed with an impressive size, they are known for their loyal instincts as well as their sandy-colored coat, which cleverly blends in seamlessly with the local environment, that help the herds that the dogs protect. Notoriously elusive and rare, the Cape Leopard lives in the Cederberg Mountains that surround Bushmans Kloof, and the Cape Leopard Trust works tirelessly to protect this precious breed. Unfortunately, as the human population in the local area has increased, so too has the number of attacks by the leopards on livestock. Fully committed to protecting its environment, as well as the local communities and wildlife, Bushmans Kloof is delighted with this natural and responsible solution to the issue of protecting one rare species while encouraging another to help protect it, which allows both the Cederberg’s farming communities and the Cape Leopard population to flourish.
Makana – A Red Carnation Culinary Experience (Included): The San peoples, or Bushmen, are the members of the indigenous hunter-gatherer cultures of southern Africa, and the oldest surviving cultures of the region. Bushmans Kloof is in many ways a celebration of San culture and heritage, and in the ancient San language Makana means ‘to feast’. It’s an apt description of what awaits guests at our dining venue, where you’ll enjoy hearty and indulgent meals. Clad in local sandstone and roofed with traditional thatch, Makana is an echo of the natural caves and simple dwellings used by the earliest inhabitants of this ancient landscape. Tables look out over the Boontjies River and wide grassy lawns, where shy antelope graze come evening. Relax in the cozy lounges near a wide hearth where a roaring fire keep the evening cooler breezes at bay, and where stories begin to unfold. Guests will enjoy a traditional Makana Dinner one evening of your stay.
Overnights at Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve in air-conditioned Luxury Room accommodations. (All Meals are included daily – Breakfast, Lunch, an extensive High Tea and a la carte Dinner; also included are activities as noted above). Please review the “Not Included” section of pricing for services that are paid directly and/or that are optional.

ADVENTURE TERMS & CONDITIONS

This Adventure requires 16 people to operate at the price quoted; if less participants join this adventure then an increase and/or decrease in cost would occur, which Thirdhome will advise all participants.
Thirdhome strongly recommends that all participants purchase travel insurance in order to participate in an Adventure. Travel Insurance is required to be purchased at the time of deposit should you wish to be covered under the “Cancel for Any Reason” plan.
THIRDHOME has partnered with USI Affinity Travel Insurance providing members full travel coverage with a discount – Click here to obtain a quote. Cancel for Any Reason insurance is required to be purchased within 14-days of confirming your participation (your paid Adventure deposit); otherwise Standard Insurance can be purchased at any time prior to your departure.
Thirdhome Adventures reserves the right to modify, change or cancel itinerary accommodations and/or alter tour routing and operations, if conditions beyond our control and that of our travel partners who operate our journeys, require such alterations thereof due to any unforeseen circumstances.
Any traveler that elects not to purchase travel insurance, agrees to release Thirdhome and its tour operation partners from liability for any loss of funds incurred due to the cancellation of a specific Thirdhome Adventure as a result of, but not limited to, an act of God, a failure to purchase travel insurance, the cessation of business with respect to a tour operator/ground operator partnered services, and/or the failure of a tour operator/ground operator to refund consumer deposits or payments following the cancellation of a Thirdhome Adventure or a material failure to complete the operation of any Thirdhome Adventure.
