HOSTS

ROBERT & LYDIA MONDAVI

Born in 1971, the son of Isabel and Michael Mondavi, Rob was raised in the Stag’s Leap district of Napa Valley, and spend much of his childhood among the vines and barrels at the Robert Mondavi Winery. An entrepreneur from a young age, he started his own business hosting bike tours through the Napa Valley wine country curating vineyard and winery discussions for his participants. After college, Rob worked for regional winemakers and progressed into sales, and later established the Napa Cigar Company in 1995 while importing premium cigars. In 2000, he formally joined the Robert Mondavi Corporation overseeing everything from luxury brand sales, direction of marketing and spearheading the brand’s hospitality operations and trade marketing programs. Perfecting the art of winemaking and learning the craft of blending, tasting and the vineyard processes, while also maintaining a key focus on green farming, Rob’s expertise has resulted in a new generation of extraordinary wines.

At his home in Stag’s Leap, Rob and his wife Lydia are raising their two sons within a charming English Bungalow-style home built in 1913 that sits on a historic parcel of land. Tucked away on the gently sloping red earth soil of Oakville, California, and perched along the picturesque Silverado Trail at Skellenger Lane, sits the iconic boutique vineyard of Rutledge & Vine. Because of Mother Earth’s unique terroir, the berries are grown with the harmoniously perfect balance of sugar, tannin, aromatics, and mouthfeel. It is here at home where Rob personally attends to the 1-acre goblet training Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard, and where the long tradition of great wine making along with his personal modern expression of the old world craftsmanship occurs…and where all the beautiful magic happens!

ABOUT THE WINE

2018 RUTLEDGE & VINE OAKVILLE CABERNET SAUVIGNON

2018 Growing Season: The spring was tepid, with extended flowering yielding balanced plump grape clusters. Temperatures remained constant and warm throughout the growing season, free of any significant heat spikes, making for a tranquil, unhurried harvest and pristine grapes.

The Vineyard: Nestled on the hillside bench at the foot of the Vaca Mountains of Oakville, our vineyard of red earth volcanic soils and stones affords the perfect growing conditions for exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard is farmed with perfect precision using state of the art organic compost and organic compost teas complimenting the near perfect soils to yield exceptional grapes.

Blend and varietal clones: The blend is 98% Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon, with 2% Howell Mountain Merlot to accentuate mid pallet and yield a subtle essence of strawberry. There are two clones of Cabernet represented with nearly equal portions, clone 4 and 337.  The clone 4 provides wonderful texture and structure while the 337 offers softer elements: floral aromatics and a generously plush middle body with warm dark chocolaty fruit character.

Rob’s Tasting Notes:
The 2018 Rutledge & Vine Cabernet Sauvignon demonstrates the full understanding of the harmony between the vineyard, winemaker, fermentation strategy and barrel selection. Lower fermentation temperatures of 80-82f provide freshness of dark and red fruit aromatics, which are truly representative of the Cabernet Sauvignon hanging on the vine, and the perfect extraction of tannins with an opulent mid-body and lengthy, dark chocolate cherry finish. The wine is full bodied yet restrained and elegant, a true connection between the modern world of ripeness and the classic old world of elegance.

Barrel Selection: The exceptional barrels of Taransaud and their invitational artist series of the Taransaud T5 find harmony with the wine. The wood staves of the T5 are aged and air cured a minimum of 5 years exceptional integration between the oak and the wine. The balance between the wood influences and the sensation of the wine should be seamless. Having worked with this vineyard for over a decade there is an understanding of how to bring harmony between barrel and grape. This balance allows the vineyard and wine to showcase a sense of place and graciousness on the palate, adding subtle and classic notes that weave harmoniously with the wine.
