This is a THIRDHOME & International Expeditions small-group tour with a maximum occupancy of 20 participants; however, the tour can operate with a minimum of 2-4 people.  The group size is kept small, allowing this Adventure to be the most engaging and rewarding experience possible.  On this active, immersive journey, travelers will connect with the local culture and varied terrains of Machu Picchu in a deeper more authentic way.

Exchange Club & Adventure Club Members, family & friends; Age requirement 14+

To truly experience this Machu Picchu adventure, you need to be able to participate in physical activities such as longer distance walking, hiking over uneven terrain and climbing stairs all within high altitude and varied elevations. If you opt to extend this adventure with a pre or post excursion to include the Inca Trail Trek & Clamping Add-On, there will be longer hiking days ranging between 2-5 hours of activity per day.

You will travel from Lima at an elevation of approximately 300 feet to a height of over 11,000 feet in Cusco and the sparse scrub vegetation of the Andean highlands. You may find yourself affected by the altitude on the expedition. The most common symptoms are headache and sometimes fatigue and dizziness. Please take it easy, especially at first. These symptoms can be minimized by resting, drinking plenty of water and taking aspirin. If you have concerns about the altitude at Cusco and Machu Picchu, ask your physician about medications that may be suitable for you. Oxygen will be available in all transport vehicles throughout your stay in Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. Oxygen is available at your hotels, but you must request it at the front desk. To prepare yourself for the high altitude, please limit your alcohol intake the night before your flight, and avoid fats, milk, cheese, oranges and heavy food at meals before flying.

Fly via your own arrangements into Lima; upon arrival meet and greet at airport with transfer to Costa del Sol Wyndham for the night. (Meals on own this day)

Journey begins with a short briefing before you embark on a short flight to Cusco – the heart of the Inca Empire and the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Western Hemisphere. Descend into the scenic and historic Urubamba Valley. Along the way, stop in Chinchero to visit a community program specializing in teaching traditional Andean handmade arts and textile making techniques. There will be time to shop and browse for the best artisan crafts including the iconic Andean alpaca hand-knitted sweaters. Enjoy lunch in the Urubamba Valley and spend tonight at the Aranwa Hotel. (B, L, D – included)

This morning take a short ride to the Ollanta train station where the group will board for the extraordinary scenic journey up to Machu Picchu (journey takes 1-1/2 hrs). Explore on a guided tour the impressive ruins with an expert regional guide who will point out the significance of the Incan stone structures, temples, and plazas. This impressive and sacred site, hidden for 400 years by semi-tropical jungle, lies in a saddle with the peaks of Machu Picchu (Old Mountain) and Huayna Picchu (Young Mountain) rising dramatically on either side. After your day of touring, transfer to the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, an intimate luxury hotel nestled on 12 secluded acres of tropical cloud forest. Enjoy dinner and overnight at the hotel. (B, L, D – included)

Today enjoy a private Machu Picchu tour – wake up early and hike to the Sun Gate with an expert regional guide. This afternoon treat yourself to the spa or visit the extensive orchid garden (considered the biggest in-habitat garden on the planet). Perhaps enjoy some bird-watching in the abundant gardens and grounds of the hotel, which together with the Machu Picchu Pueblo, are home to exquisite birds including 16 unique species of hummingbirds and the Andean cock-of-the-rock national bird of Peru. Tonight enjoy an enriching lecture on the history and mysticism surrounding the legendary ruins, along with a detailed discussion of Inca culture. (B, L, D – included)

This morning after breakfast, board the train to the Sacred Valley. Upon arrival, explore with an expert regional guide the fortress of Ollantaytambo, along with its intricate walkways, canals, and pools – all a testament to the builder’s unrivaled skills. Enjoy a traditional lunch before experiencing an amazing Peruvian Paso Fino Horse show at Wayra Ranch. Continuing across the valley toward Sacsayhuaman – a huge fortress of massive stones which dramatically zigzags across the mountain-side. Arrive into Cusco this evening before dinner and overnight at the Aranwa Hotel. (B, L, D – included)

Spend the morning strolling the streets on an expertly guided informative tour of Cusco, exploring the Koricancha – also known as Santo Domingo, Santa Catalina Convent and the Cathedral. The Church and Convent of Santo Domingo are beautiful examples of Spanish architecture superimposed on Inca construction – the complex was built over the Koricancha, a temple dedicated to the Sun and the Inca’s most important god. The walls are covered in sheets of gold, studded with emeralds and turquoise. Enjoy a local lunch in a traditional restaurant, and afterward, the afternoon is free to explore the city further on your own. This evening enjoy a farewell dinner featuring Andean delicacies. Overnight in Cusco at the Aranwa Hotel. (B, L, D – included)

This morning enjoy breakfast and relax. After lunch, transfer to Cusco airport for group flight back across the Andes to Lima, and transfer to the group airport hotel for relaxing in your “day-use” room before your late evening international flights homeward. PLEASE NOTE – flights will depart Lima red-eye and arrive on DAY 8 into your final destination. (B, L – included)
