Descend into Algar do Carvao, an ancient lava tube known as the “Cavern of Coal” with an expert guide. From thermal heated pools and craters to lush local farms, delve into the culture and tastes of Portuguese island life. Indulge in the traditional Portuguese volcanic cuisine known as Cozido das Furnas, cooked over the natural heat formed from deep within the earth. This Portugal Azores Adventure is a private small-group tour with an occupancy of only 19-24 participants.  On this active, immersive journey, travelers will connect with the local culture of Portugal in an authentic and more intimate way. Our group size is kept small, allowing this Portugal Adventure to be a more engaging and rewarding experience.

Activity Level

Level 3: To experience this unique destination, you will need to be able to participate in physical activities such as longer walking tours, trekking and walking over uneven terrain, climbing stairs and various time-period lengths of standing (between 1-2 hrs) alongside an expert team of guides. You can climb onboard various modes of transportation (ex: rickshaw, cable car, camelback/horseback, off-road vehicles, zodiac or small exploration boats, etc), and adapt to changes in elevation. You can expect some longer active days with included group activities, balanced with some leisure time to relax and explore as you wish. In addition, you’ll enjoy gathering with your adventure participants for occasional group meals on set days, along with the flexibility to experience the local dining scene on your own within the destination.

Your Portugal Azores Adventure begins with a stunning arrival into the Azores on the island of São Miguel, the largest of the nine volcanic islands. Upon arrival, enjoy a meet and greet at the airport with transfer to our group hotel. After check-in, perhaps sit along the seaside promenade and breathe in the mild air of the Atlantic and take in the beautiful view – and see why the picturesque Azores are commonly referred to as “The Hawaii of Europe”. Get to know Ponta Delgada, the capital city of the Azores, on a brief walking tour of the area with ample time to relax late afternoon. Celebrate the beginning of your journey with a welcome group dinner at a wonderful local restaurant. Overnight accommodations at Grand Hotel Acores Atlantico. (Dinner included)


After breakfast, depart the hotel and leave the main road behind as we embrace an off-road adventure on the “Green Island.” Traverse the dirt roads and pass by dairy farms before pausing at the highest point of the island, taking in the all-encompassing natural beauty at your feet. Venture to Sete Cidades, the striking blue and green mirror lakes, where you’ll navigate the rim of the entire crater. As you circle these bodies of water, gaze down upon the dazzling blue lake (reflecting the sky) and the adjacent green lake (reflecting the earth). Take a short hike to emerge at the peak of the island and take in the astounding views of Lagoa do Canario, the island’s most recognized landscape. Return to Ponta Delgada with free time to relax in a local café or meander through the streets. Perhaps continue your exploration with an optional tour…opt in for a swim with a pod of dolphins or embark on an intimate whale-watching excursion. Enjoy breakfast this morning; afterward embark on a full-day exploration that begins at the extraordinary and scenic volcano-city of Furnas. Taste Portugal’s sweet side at a family-run queijadas (pastry) bakery; then trade the warm aroma that wafts through the air of the bakery for the heavenly encompassing scent of floral splendor, as you wander through the organic paradise of Terra Nostra Botanical Garden on a guided tour. Afterward, immerse yourself into a heated pool of rejuvenation in the natural thermal waters of the Furnas Valley. Within the heat of the volcanic earth, watch as your lunch is unearthed and served as a traditional Cozido das Furnas meal. As you dig into this delightful culinary experience, admire an exclusive viewpoint of Furnas Lake from the Terra Nostra Tea House. Afterward, continue onward to the pastures of Porto Formosa, home to one of the only European tea plantations. Return back to São Miguel to enjoy an evening of leisure on your own as you wish. After breakfast, wish São Miguel goodbye as we depart the island and begin our journey to the colorful island of Terceira. We will explore the stunning volcanic region, where you can stand along the edge of the crater at Serra do Cume viewpoint and take in the island’s patchwork of infinite green. Continue onward as we swap the arid yet grassy fields for the picturesque sandy shores at Praia Victoria, or “Beach of Victory.” Get to know Angra do Heroismo as you walk the streets this afternoon with your local guide. Recently restored in traditional style, admire the white facades and colorful trims of the iconic buildings in this UNESCO World Heritage site. Check-into our lovely group hotel and relax. This evening, experience a taste of Azorean culture during a wonderful group dinner at a local restaurant where you’re invited to try alcatra, the savory delicious meat stew Terceira is known for. Overnight accommodations at the Hotel Cruzeiro Terceira. (Breakfast and dinner included)


Enjoy breakfast this morning and choose how you wish to experience Terceira. You may opt to relax or embark on an optional exploration tour beginning with an adventurous hiking trek along two volcanoes at Misterios Negros Nature Reserve; followed by an underground experience into the ethereal Algar do Carvao, the “Cavern of Coal,” with an expert guide. Feel the quiet stillness around you as you descend into this ancient lava tube, gazing up at the looming stalactites hanging above you. Then, in the afternoon it’s your choice – Choose to swim and soak in the natural volcanic pools of Biscoitos – OR- Hike along lava fields and vineyards. In the afternoon enjoy leisure time in the charming town of Angra, or consider two optional excursions – entice your taste buds on an optional Portuguese wine and tapas experience – OR – explore the island on an off-road tour with a local guide. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon and relax. This evening enjoy a local restaurant on your own from our selected favorites. Overnight accommodations at the Hotel Cruzeiro Terceira. This morning after breakfast, depart Terceira and say “Bom Dia” (Good Morning) to Faial, the beautiful “Blue Island” of the Azores. With hydrangeas as far as the eye can see and stunning coastlines, discover the remarkable beauty of this island. Peek into the daily life of dairy production by the family-owned Morro cheese factory, where you’ll sample the tasty artisan cheeses. Encounter the volcanic vitality of Faial when you walk upon the collapsed Caldeira and the ash hills of the Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Center. Arrive at our hotel to relax and enjoy an evening at leisure on your own. This evening enjoy a local restaurant on your own from our selected favorites. Your exploration continues with a scenic ferry ride to the nearby island of Pico. Explore the area on a brief walking tour with your local guide. Enjoy a lovely home-hosted authentic Portuguese lunch along with local cheeses and meats and other Azorean culinary favorites. Make a stop at Lagoa do Capitao, where you can see the landscape of Sao Jorge Island in the distance. Settle in amongst the uniquely built lava stone houses of Aldeia da Fonte overlooking the sea, where the sounds of rolling waves will serenade you to sleep for the next three nights. Enjoy a group dinner this evening at this innovative cliff-side abode; perhaps opting to take a stroll through the luxurious gardens before, all the while being captivated by the enchanting incomparable views of the Atlantic. Enjoy a relaxing morning with breakfast, depart the hotel with your local guide and explore the surreal landscape of grapes that grow between plots of rocky stone walls as you wander through the UNESCO Pico vineyards. In the center of the vineyard, climb the bright red windmill and take in a new perspective of the stretching fields, lava rocks, and vines. Introduce yourself to the history of this island’s vineyards at the Pico Wine Museum alongside your expert local guide. Next, taste exclusive wines of limited production at a fantastic local wine collaborative. Then, it’s your choice – In Lajes, choose to visit the whaling museum highlighting the historical ties of the industry to the culture of the islands -OR- opt to take advantage of free time in town to explore the area independently. Following breakfast this morning, depart Pico for Lisbon where you will enjoy some fun leisure time in this vibrant city. Whether you want to relax, wander the lovely streets or take the historic tram to the bustling Alfama district, spend the day however you please. Tonight, the group will gather to toast the end of your journey with a farewell dinner at a wonderful local restaurant. Overnight accommodations at the Iberostar Lisbon Hotel. (Breakfast and dinner included)


Following breakfast this morning, check-out of your hotel for group ground transfer back to the São Miguel airport for check-in of your return international flight home or onward. Say adeus (goodbye) to the beautiful Azores as you depart this Atlantic archipelago filled with many fond memories of your time spent here. (Breakfast included)

The Portugal Adventure deposit is non-refundable and adventure is fully non-refundable after final payment. This Portugal Adventure requires a minimum of 19-24 people to operate at the price quoted. An increase can occur if the trip operates with fewer participants.
